Tenses – Tenses are all about the physical and mental actions that take place. Tenses are also about the physical and mental expressions that take place.

Tenses = These are all 12 tenses.

• Simple Present Tense, Present Simple Tense, Present Continuous Tense, Present Perfect Tense, Present Perfect Continuous Tense

• Simple Past Tense, Past Simple Tense, Past Continuous Tense, Past Perfect Tense, Past Perfect Continuous Tense

• Simple Future Tense, Future Simple Tense, Future Continuous Tense, Future Perfect Tense, Future Perfect Continuous Tense.

• In a simple term –

• When an action happens, does, uses, or takes place, we call it Tense.

• When an expression happens, does, uses, or takes place, we call it Tense.

• When an action happened, did, used, or took place, we call it Tense.

• When an expression happened, did, used, or took place, we call it Tense.

• When an action is doing, happening, using, or taking place, we call it Tense.

• When an action was doing, happening, using, or taking place, we call it Tense.

• When an expression or action will happen, do, use, or take place, etc actually in the future, we call it Tense.

For Example –

• I walk on the road. [Physical action that takes place – A walk is a physical act. I do a physical action in this sentence]

• He studies daily. [Mental action that takes place – Study is a mental act. He does a metal action in this sentence]

• She was sleeping. [Physical and Mental action that takes place – Sleep is a physical and mental activity. She was doing an action in this sentence]

• You seem nice. [Expression that takes place – Seem is an expression. I use an expression about ‘You’ in this sentence]

• Mr English pretended to be an expert in English. [Expression that takes place – Pretend is an expression. Expression of Mr English takes place in this sentence]

• We will cover the car. [Expression or action that takes place – Will is an expression. The cover is an action. We express an action about covering the car in this sentence. This sentence can become an action or expression which depends on the future when it will happen.]

Modals – Modals are all about the expressions that do not take place. When we use Modals, we only express, we do not do it. When we do, we use Tense.

Modals =

• Modals – can, could, may, might, should, would, will, shall, ought to, and must, etc.

• Expressions –

• In a simple term – Modals are all about expressions.

• When we use any ‘Modal verbs’ in the sentence, the action does not happen, do, use, or take place.

• When we use any ‘Modal verbs’ in the sentence, the action did not happen, do, use, or take place.

• When we use any ‘Modal verbs’ in the sentence, the action is not happening, doing, using, or taking place.

• When we use any ‘Modal verbs’ in the sentence, the action was not happening, doing, using, or taking place.

• When we use any ‘Modal verbs’ in the sentence, the action will not happen, do, use, or take place.

For Example –

• I can walk on the road. [Expression that does not take place – Can is an expression. A walk is a physical act. I express about walking but not walking actually. The action is not happening, it is just an expression.]

• He could study daily. [Expression that does not take place – Could is an expression. A study is a mental act. He expresses about studying but not studying actually. The action is not happening, it is just an expression.]

• She would sleep. [Expression that does not take place – Would is an expression. Sleep is a physical and mental activity. She expresses about sleeping but not sleeping actually. The action is not happening, it is just an expression.]

• You should seem nice. [Expression that does not take place – Should is an expression. Seem is also an expression. I give advice to you expressing about seeming nice but you do or you do not do. It is all on you. I just express. The action is not happening, it is just an expression.]

• Mr English can pretend to be an expert in English. [Expression that does not take place – Can is an expression. Pretend is an expression. KJ shows the ability of Mr English to express about pretending but not pretending actually. The action is not happening, it is just an expression.]

• We will cover the car. [Expression that does not take place – Will is an expression. The cover is an action. We express an action about covering the car in this sentence. This sentence can become an action or expression which depends on the future when it will happen but if we take ‘Will’ as a Modal verb then it is just an expression.]
